What should I do about my transmission?
(2010-05-30 10:50:59) 1. Says: About a month ago my check engine light came on and I took it to auto zone and they gave me code P0742(transmission code) which means torque converter clutch stuck on. First I went to Aamco and they said that my transmission fluid was burnt but they would have to look further into the transmission to see what the problem was. I went to Ridge Transmission (atra) and they said something was going on with the transmission and that's all they told me, basically they said they would have to look into the transmission further. I went to a place another transmission spot and they didn't notice anything with the transmission. I had someone I knew change my transmission fluid and filter. I went to meineke and they told me my shift solenoid was going bad.The next day I took my car to another Aamco and the said they dint know where meineke got that from but they wasn't seeing any problems he told me to driven it on the expressway to see if the check engine light come back on.(the check engine light doesn't stay on it comes and goes, and when the car start to jerk that's when the check engine light come on and I turn my car off and start it back up and it will be okay and the check engine light eventually goes back off) Two days ago I took it back to the aamco that I saw last and he test drove it and ran the scanner and he gave me codes p1811-maximum adapt and long shift,p1730-gear control malfunction, and p0742- torque converter clutch stuck on. He told me to bring it back to them for a half day and they will test drive it with the scanner in it and be able to tell me the exact price to fix it and it will not be an additional charge. Should I see what they say/let them rebuild it/ find a used transmission and let someone put it in.2. Says: Depends on if you have a thousand bucks and like the carotherwise just see how long it goes , with a used one you never know what you are getting.
Sure, I would let them check it and give you a firm price. Then at least you will know the facts to decide what to do.3. Says: Keisha,
You have really done your homework on this. If you get the transmission rebuilt by aamco, make sure you get a written quote, Also make sure that who ever does the work you get a warranty. I would stay away from used transmissions, unless you are going to sell the car. If you are going to keep it then put the necessary money into it. If you are going to sell it find out what it is worth and then see how much you want to put into it.
Good Luck.
Bill4. Says: Transmission problems are tough, its not something your backyard mechanic can usually deal with. If you let them "look into it further" expect to pay for a rebuilt tranny. I would stick with the aamco at least its a reputable company. A used trans you dont know what your getting, if it doesnt work your replacing it a second time and labor is expensive. I have a pickup and tranny just went out so I'm trying to decide the same thing and I used to rebuild them for a living.
If it was me I would keep driving it, my pickup was bad for 2 years I was just gentle on it. Also from what I've checked the price does not change if you have it rebuilt today when you can drive it in as to waiting a month and having it towed in.5. Says: Getting it rebuilt would be the way to go if you are planning on keeping the car as you would get warranty ect ect, but if you are planning on changing cars in the near future I would just replace it with a 2nd hand one.6. Says: Well first of all you have to look at the value of your car. You stated 01 impala, but i would need to know the miles and if its a base model or an LS. If its a LS loaded with the 3.8v6 and the miles are under a hundred thousand, then i would consider fixing the problem. But from what your describing it doesn't sound like any one is sure its the transmission. The computer is sending mixed codes and you stated that it doesn't shift bad when the light is reset? A transmission is either out or its not.You might be able to drive the car if the trans is going out, but you would feel slipping or jerking in between gears and it wouldn't act up and then drive perfect again. I would check to make sure that you don't have a sending unit bad before i let any one tear down my transmission. Also if the transmission was bad, when your friend changed the fluid and screen it would have gone out then, that's a big don't do when you think your transmission is going out.7. Says: AAmco has been sued by the attorney general in well over 14 states, plus several others at last count, what ever you do, do not trust any aamco dealer, AAmco sends employees to classes to learn how to talk people into unnecessary repairs, and they will fix non broken transmissions and god alone knows what else, there are literally hundreds if not thousands of complaints about aamco business practices. I paid 1,200 dollars for a heavy duty transmission in a van, I am in a wheelchair and use a wheelchair lift in my van, aamco sold me a defective transmission, then sold the store, to another guy (but Still aamco) and the transmission self destructed from poor crappy work, I was no where near an aamco, so I paid to get it rebuilt right this time, found out from the second shop what poor work aamco did. By the time I made it back an aamco that did the work, the new owner refused to honor any prior work. just type aamco complaints in the web search box and start digging.
your transmission issue sounds intermittent, which makes it very hard to diagnose, from the wide variety of things that several different shops have said, I suggest you wait until this problem gets to the point the transmission is jerking all the time, other wise, some body will just guess, trying to get a rebuild repair order signed by you, I believe you have a problem, it is still intermittent apparently which makes it hard to figure out. good luck Tag: What should I do about my transmission?
