My brother is convinced that oil changes are a conspiracy and/or not necessary?

1. Fly B Says: He says that oil changes are only necessary because car companies know money can be made off of it. Otherwise they would make oil changes easier for an ordinary person to do at home... He also says that people in Europe don't get oil changes at all and don't suffer engine problems.

How can I convince him otherwise?
2. Country Boy Says: Fly, Your brother is running a load of misinformation on you. #1. Car companies don't get rich doing oil and filter changes. They don't own oil companies. As a matter of fact, most charge less or the same money for this service than irresponsible fast oil change shops.

I regard myself as fairly ordinary and I've been doing my own oil changes for the past 51 years. It's too simple not to do yourself. It's never too late to learn.

Over 2/3 of the cars in Europe are diesels which require *shorter mileage oil change intervals than gasoline powerd vehicles in America. Many American car manufacturers have stretched their oil change intervals as high as 8,500 miles under the best conditions with today's engine oil.

Have your brother stick his eye inside any motor that hasn't had the oil changed regularly. The build-up of sludge and varnish will not let you pull a valve cover or oil pan. A $20.00 scheduled oil and filter change will make any motor last hundreds of thousands of miles. A truck or an auto investment is a heavy investmant. Those of us who run them till the wheels fall off do regular maintenance. If he's pencil pusher and is able read precission measuring instruments invite him to measure and compare every moving part inside an engine that quit because of no oil changes against the same motor with scheduled care. That's the only way to win him over!

If your brother is affluent enough to throw away his car every year there's no need to change the oil. Most of us are not that foolish. Case in point was the Toyota engine destruction a few years ago by thousands of penny pinching idiots that never chainged their oil. He should take time to read about cause and effect of auto maintenance.

The arrigiant and affluent can't be bothered with regular maintenance and repair. Something tells me you won't chage your brothers mis-guided opinion. Don't be conserned because he is one of many with the same additude.
3. David J Says: They're not absolutely necessary they just improve the performance of the vehicle and sometimes lengthen the life of the engine.
4. Bahr Says: Don't. After he drives around for a while without oil changes, he'll learn quick enough.

But yes, they are absolutely necessary. Oil helps prevent friction in the engine. Friction in the engine will cause severe wear on it and the vehicle will not last half as long as it would with regular oil changes.
5. sha1gon Says: Oil changes are easy for an ordinary person to do at home, it takes like 15 minutes.

If he's so convinced let him use the same oil for tens of thousands of miles and ruin his engine.
6. ken k Says: forget him/oil undergoes changes during combustion and heat/ability to lubricate is compromised /your brother knows nothing/car companies dont care/they sell cars not oil changes
7. Phuck 0baama Says: HA! Thats funny because your brother is wrong, unless of course you are speaking of AMSOIL. AMSOIL claims that you never need to change the oil using thier product, only the oil filter. Would I ever do that. Bet your life that I stick to my maintenance schedule. It prolongs life, decreases wear and tear, and keeps the engine cooler and clear of plugs.
8. brian d Says: let him do what he wants and when he starts buying new engines he will realize that $35 for an oil change 4 times a year is cheaper that $5000 for an engine every two years. people in europe DO change oil or they would be buying engines as well. the protection properties in the oil break down with heat, engine wear, and dirt.
car companies don't make oil or filters. they make cars and parts. if his theory were true, manufacturers would tell you to never change your oil so they could sell more engines.
9. Robert Says: btw oil changes are extremely easy pull the drain plug replace oil filter and top of the oil. and cars in europe are diesel and diesel fluid has a natural lubricant.
10. H.M.C speed Says: Your brother is a FOOL! The more you change your oil (within reason) the longer the engine will last. Oil changes are simple with Very basic tools- oil filter wrench, oil plug wrench.
11. Jim F Says: How can you tell if your engine's life has been extended??
12. D Says: Your brother is an idiot. After a few thousand miles oil starts to lose it's additives that give it it's lubricating properties, and starts to get really full of suspended dirt. Considering how relatively little it costs to change, it seems really stupid not to. And by the way, people in Europe do change their oil, the ones that don't are buying new engines after 40,000 miles.
13. Doubtful 360 Says: He may be able to lengthen the life of his engine oil 2 or 3 times by adding pro-ma,but he should change oil and filter at least every 20,000 miles I think.
