How do I get a garage to fix what they broke?

(2010-05-30 10:57:07)
1. Ady Says: I put my car into a garage to get my glow plugs drilled out. When I got the car back, the guy said he didn't drill one of them straight, but he sealed it with loctite. A day later, I started to hear air coming out of the plug that he screwed up. I phoned him and he wanted me to pay for a heli-coil or whatever it is. I told him no and he said he wasn't paying for one, but he would phone about and try to get one off someone. I haven't heard anything since.

Where do I stand from a legal point of view and what way should I go about getting something done about it?

Thanks.
2. Timbo is here Says: Amazing number of American answers to what seems to be a UK problem....
The fix the nechanic tried was acceptable practice but unfortunately did not work. Not everything is a precise science and drilling out things like that is one of them. I do not see that you have a gripe with the helicoil and you paying for it.
3. The Great Bagel Smuggler Says: its his fault if he broke it, takes his *** to court
4. Michael Says: I've seen people get results by contacting their State Representative or by contacting a television station that has one of those shows that exposes consumer fraud. Business are more afraid of the latter.
5. Infinitrium Says: Garages carry insurance for reasons like this. Take the car to another garage and tell them about the incident with the first garage, then go back to the first garage and threaten court action. Sometimes that'll be enough to get them to pay for a proper repair.
6. LEO Says: Your best bet is to contact the Better Business Bureau, they will know what laws are in place for customers in your area. They differ from state to state. Usually it will be on you to prove he messed you over, but if there are multiple complaints against that garage you will have a better chance at getting your moneys worth. Whatever you do, do not threaten them with going to BBB. Just do it.
7. dick car guy Says: well looks like you have a broken truck in need of a heli coil, I suggest you find one, if you want your truck fixed, It appears your way is not working, while I dont like the business practices of your old mechanic, find a new one who is smart enough to want you to be a customer. either way, you are going to buu s heli coil.
8. Wolf Says: Go to to your consumer affairs department and file a grievance. You can also file with the license bureau and the BBB.

But go to another shop for the repairs and then submit the bill to him. If he does not pay you may sue him.

The other shop is a second opinion and their diagnosis is a valid in court that he messed up.
