What are the advantages of having teeth on a timing belt?

3. crash Says: The teeth on a timing belt are vital to proper crank/cam alignment. Most engines these days are known as "interference" engines. This means that the valves will occupy the same space in one position that the piston will occupy in another. If the crank and cam were out of alignment, the valves and pistons could potentially clash and become damaged. Teeth on a timing belt ensures no slippage that can cause catastrophic misalignment. The belt itself becomes worn and stretched overtime, which is why most manufacturers generally recommend replacement every 60k miles.
