How do i find the right distributor for my new engine? went from a 5.0 to a 5.0 h.o.?

1. William Says: I just installed a 302 h.o. from a 1989 mark7 into my 1995 f-150 but used my old distributor now it doesn't want to hold a load, but runs nice while idling. I am not a mechanic just tried to save money. I also kept my intake from the old motor just in case the info helps

2. idontgivafork Says: they are in fact the same distributor.there may be a different drive gear though.for sure the ho engine has a bronze distributor gear for use with a roller cam.if your other 302 had a roller cam,then they are absolutely the same,id say youve missed something.either timing to far advanced,or something else simple.also remember that most ho's run a different firing order.i know for a fact there are 3 different firing orders for 302 engine.i had an oddball 82 and 83 ho that ran a firing order that was not listed in the manuals.this is also how i found out one of my spare engines was not an 82 ho, it had the wrong firing order.all the right equipment,wrong cam.just start digging around, youll find the answer.
