1. trucker Says: my truck has had trouble starting since iv had it now for 2 yrs its an 01 5.2 L once it starts it runs fine it just takes to long to start , iv done plugs wires cap and rotter, fuel pump fuel treatments, once it starts it will start fine again within 5min but after that it turns over way to long. after it starts you can smell the fuel so i don't think it a fuel problem any more , i cant figure it out
2. bandit_60 Says: if you can smell gas then it,s getting too much. it might be the fuel pump regulator dumping too much gas into the injectors.
3. The Bling King 22090 Says: Should have a real car.
4. spike Says: possibly a leaking fuel pressure regulator flooding the intake(pull off the vacuum hose and see if there is gas leaking after you shut it off, may have to wait a while), or fuel pump check valve may not be holding pressure.
5. adam/penny Says: i can think of a couple of things it might be.
if you can smell gas it may be the float in the carburetor is not working correctly thereby flooding the engine before you even get to start it. it's the burning off of that gas that takes it so long to start.
you don't mention how old the car really is. if it's old enough to have a choke in the carburetor choke may not be closing all the way which is what needs to happen every time you try to start a motor THAT IS COLD. when hot the choke will remain open and the vehicle will then start till the engine once again gets cold and the choke has to close. those chokes are spring controlled the spring is heat sensitive just like the spring in the thermostat that controls the flow of water.
just a guess on my part.
good luck to ya
