Installing rockers after replacing cracked vortec head?
(2010-05-30 11:48:32) 1. Says: I am replacing one head that was cracked with a re-manufactured one, it is not bare, it has the valves and springs, just NO rockers. I have a 1999 suburban vortec 350 that overheated . I have the head and intake off now. Do I install the head, intake and all of the other crap...and THEN put my rockers on this new head? The engine of course has not been turned at all. Do I just snug the rockers down until the push rods don't turn freely, then back off a tiny bit? I'm a little unsure about this...2. Says: you install the head, torque it to the specifications, and the pattern must be correct ( I am really hoping you have a shop manual this would be a really good investment, especially if you are not one hundred percent sure. and a good torque wrench is a must. then the manifold and other crap. last would be the rocker arms, again a shop manual would be worth its Weight in gold here, once they are installed correctly, then put the valve covers on, and you can dip all the stuff in pre lube or thirty Weight too wouldn't hurt. I am hoping you have inspected and replaced all the parts to make sure they were in good shape, and not any excessive wear, and that everything was installed from wherever it came from originally, or is new. generally things tend to wear a certain way, and its best to try to reinstall used parts in the same hole they came out of.3. Says: **EDIT**Yesjust to make your life easier, with itake off, go ahead and stab in the dizzy lined to your marks..
Now adjust valves. You can turn engine over all you want to now. I use the center bolt on the damper (lower pully/crank pully), Put your socket on that center damper bolt, use a breaker bar to 'tighten' the bolt. That will turn engine over the right way.
Then once you have valves adjusted, turn engine till your same dizzy marks lines up again and pull dizzy out.
Put intake and rest of engine back together, then re stab the dizzy alined to your marks
**EDIT OFF**
I like to adjust valves wth intake off, if at all possible.
You will need to turn engine over quite a bit to get each cam lobe at right place to adjust that rocker.. Can't just go down through them and sung them up, theres an order you have to follow
Its easier to see the cam lobe at full lift by watching the lifter rather than the pushrod
Idea is to get X lobe to full lift and adjust the opposite, caue its lobe will be at no lift.
Like #1 piston and #6 piston comes to TDC at the same time, but one is on compression stroke and other is not.
Heres a very detailed tech write up on adjusting valves. I have been doing them this away for more years than I cae to remember

Oh and be sure to look at Hydraulic Lifter Adjustment.. As you have a hyd. cam and it and a solid lifter cam using a diff way of setting the valves Tag: Installing rockers after replacing cracked vortec head?
