1. phinetic Says: Heres the quick situation: 98 Chevy Cavalier that's been smoking recently [engine] it started "chugging" at stop signs or while starting but stopped when I accelerate. That stopped, and now it starts smoking almost immediately [within a mile or so]. I checked the oil and it was really low, so I put in a quart. My engine also has lots of oil that has accumulated over the years on it.

Heres a picture of a similar engine and where I've seen it smoking, it almost stops instantly when I turn off the engine. There seems to be 4 rubber things that seem to go into the engine block, and where it connects, it seems to be smoking, thanks a lot!
2. Danger Mouse Is My Hero Says: I agree with Michael P. I would add that you should get some cleaner (I like the Purple Power cleaner sold at Advance and Auto Zone) and clean your engine either at the self serve car wash or at home with a spray nozzle on your garden hose. Clean it several times until it is CLEAN. At this point you can see where the oil is coming from.
3. Michael P Says: it looks like you have oil leaking(probably from your valve cover gasket), and it's burning off on your exhaust manifold. The oil burning on the manifold is what creates the smoke. Find the leak, and you'll fix your problem. the chugging sound is probably because your car is low on oil. Make sure you check it frequently and keep oil in it or you risk your engine siezing.
