Are roll cages legal on street cars?
(2010-05-30 12:26:02) 1. Says: my friend was just in an accident were he got t boned by a truck doing about 60mph. his car was destroyed and his girlfriend is hospitalized. it really made me rethink my priorities of the mods to my car and i want to install a decent roll cage to minimalize damage to my car and my passengers if i were ever to be in an accident myself.im thinking something like a 6 point cage would be sufficient, something that offers side protection.
my only question is if this is a legal mod for a street car. i remember someone telling me that it wasnt, but i dont really care, i would rather pay a fine than get injured in an accident. i live in ct, does anybody know?2. Says: All cars built today have a type of roll cage hidden between the interior and exterior. I can't imagine adding further support to the structure would by itself be illegal. Where you will run into a problem is adding anything that would obstruct your vision or hinder your ability to operate the vehicle safely would be a problem. building a framework of metal tubing inside the passenger compartment is bound to do this in some way. The NHSTA and insurance companies test all cars for all types of collisions including side impact and there is a lot of video out there showing how different cars preformed. I would suggest doing a little research and finding a vehicle that would make you feel safe in the event of an accident without adding things that will make an accident more likely.3. Says: yes4. Says: Its unsightly, but perfectly legal.5. Says: It may not help in the way you think.
Cars already have fairly strong passenger cages - interfering with that by adding extra strenthening in the wrong place could well make things worse rather than better.
Add to that the concerns about hitting the cage - again cars passenger compartments are carefully designed to minimise the chances of a head-to-shell collision - that could be severely compromised by adding a hundred kilos of steel in the wrong place.
EDIT - Don't forget that if you do get injured and the rescue services have to cut you out it's going to take a lot longer if there's a cage holding the passenger cell together. That delay might cost your life.6. Says: Yes that are legal and a good addition for safety reasons. I have one in my '79 Camero.7. Says: it is legal unfortunately.8. Says: roll cages are designed for single car accedents not for a multi car pile up on the roads.
they are just that roll cages to keep the driver safe on the race track not for roads.
u get tboned and u have all the extra steel to pin you in the car or worst to penetrate your body if its not welded right. the next question is do u really want to crawl over those bars to get in and out? take it from me it sucks had a 6 point in a camaro i built for a 1/4 mile racer and i only drove it once and HATED it only cause of the cage!9. Says: They are. problem is they are a "roll cage" not a collision cage. as it was mentioned by another, think of being extrucated from a car that has much more metal and blockage in case of an accident. It would take much longer to get you out. Also the government has a standards on collision safety, If they make that big of a difference in a collision they would come factory equipped just like air bags.
