Is my transmission shot?
(2010-05-30 12:30:10) 1. Says: My 2001 Hyundai Elantra has 189,000 miles and runs ok sometimes, but occasionally the transmission seems to skip, sending a shudder through the car. After this, it tachs high (about 3,000 rpms) and loses power at 45mph or faster. It also tachs high and seems to lack power when accelerating from a stop. The problem seems to go away after I let the car sit over night. I had the transmission flushed but it didn't seem to have any effect. Is my transmission shot?2. Says: Your transmission is probably due for a rebuild. It will need new clutch packs, new seals and gaskets. It is due for a new (or rebuilt) torque converter and perhaps a new pump. This is probably a $1500 + job. If everything else on the car is in good shape, it may be worth the investment. You may be able to buy a used transmission from an auto salvage yard for less, but it will be a gamble.A reputable auto salvage yard will give you a free replacement guarantee it for a few months, but they won't cover the labor costs to pull out the first replacement and install a different trans, So for most people, it's not a good choice.
