Air Condition question it had 3 years never use?
(2010-05-30 12:37:40) 1. Says: I want to put freon on my Durango when I bought the vehicle the former owner say he think the heater core is bad in that is why the a/c stop working, It had been 3 yrs since the a/c or use the heater was last use. My question can I put freon in see what happen or this is a danger job to do alone? You think when I put the freon in the air compressor can break because it had a long time?2. Says: I personally do not recommend trying to charge an A/C system yourself. There is a specific amount of refrigerant, measured in lbs and ounces, and specified on a label under the hood, that needs to be installed, and I don't trust the do-it-yourself kits to do it right. Not only that, if there's a leak in the system and you attempt to charge it, you are actually breaking the law, because you are effectively just releasing freon into the air. I recommend taking it to a shop where they can charge it momentarily, diagnose for leaks, and then recover the A/C charge if they find a leak, rather than just blowing it out into the air. In addition, you might find that the car has an adequate refrigerant charge and the A/C is just not kicking on because of a simple switch problem or something. Spend the money and get it diagnosed right.3. Says: The heater core is completely independent of the A/C system. You can bypass the heater core and the A/C will still work fine - you just won't have any heat in cold weather. I've done it for a leaking heater core. It is possible that it could be something as simple as the deflector door in the heater core isn't closing off the hot air flow, allowing only hot air from the heater core into the passenger cabin.I would take it to an A/C technician for evaluation. But keep in mind, they make money by overhauling A/C systems. I'm thinking the previous owner knows the A/C system is trashed out and needs major work, but isn't really telling you the whole story.
Troubleshooting from here is next to impossible.4. Says: The A/C has nothing to do with the heater core, two completely different systems.
Heater core could have a leak if that's why it was by-passed.
The A/C won't work because it has a seal in it that relies on the oil in the compressor getting spread through it when you run the A/C. If it wasn't run, that seal is dried up and leaking and putting freon in will just let it leak out.
You need to take it somewhere to have it worked on, not a job for the amateur. Tag: Air Condition question it had 3 years never use?
