Jump start car, engine shuts off after removing cables?

(2010-05-30 12:56:31)
1. DOWNCAST Says: why does the engine shut off after giving the car a boost? it engine stays running as long as its connected, but as soon as we remove the jumper cables the engine stops...the car had a new battery installed before winter, and didn't run much. and stayed garaged during the whole winter. car is a toyota celica
2. tom4bucs Says: sounds like you have something disconnected on your celica

reasoning - it takes the jumper car - to make the connection complete
and when that is removed - you lose it in the celica

battery may be bad - I would have that checked
and sometimes in an older car - when you replace the battery
you have to replace the alternator, too

may just have one wire disconnected - and where that is ???????

sorry - just experience - not an SAE mechanic

all the best
3. Demian Says: sounds to me like your alternator needs new brushes in it's voltage regulator. plus the battery is probably completely dead.
4. fire_inur_eyes Says: The battery only STARTS the car--the alternator and the voltage regulator recharge the battery as it runs--and they provide the electrical power to keep the car running=--NOT the battery.. SO---the alternator OR the voltage regulator are probably bad. Go to a GOOD mechanic for a proper check AND repair.
5. MK3SupraMan Says: Alternator Alternator Alternator Alternator Alternator
6. NICK N Says: Most likely is the alternator the causes the battery to drain. Put another battery and turn the car on and then disconnect the cables if the engine shuts off you're alternator has gone bad. You could have it rebuilt or replace with a new one. GOOD LUCK
7. Will Says: your alternator has gone bad that is what keeps your battery charged while the car is running it will cost between 300 to 500 depending on the make and model just about all autopart stores can test the alternator and let you know if it is bad and after you get the problem fixed since the battery is not very old have an autopart store charge that for you instead of letting a mechanic talk you into spending another 75 dollars on a new battery it takes about an hour and it is another free service provided by most car part stores.
8. olddog0558 Says: Dead alternator. Take it off, get to a NAPA or Autozone, that type of place, and they can test it for you.
