Why An Internal Oil Filter?

(2010-05-30 12:57:42)
1. Oehler Says: My 2010 Corolla has an internal oil filter are there any benefits to that? All my cars in the past have been external.
2. Alicia Says: Two advantages of this invention are that the possibility of oil leaks is reduced and cleaner oil reaches the lubrication points in the compressor. A further advantage of this internal oil filter is to allow easy replacement of the inexpensive filter element (as opposed to the whole oil filter vessel) while the compressor is charged with refrigerant. A further advantage of this invention is to minimize the possibility that the filter vessel will be damaged during shipping or installation of the compressor.
3. brian d Says: the premise is the same. used to be most cars had cartridge filters rather than spin on.
4. Stpaulguy Says: The shell on the spin on filter adds weight and is a waste of steel. Even when crushed, they still hold oil inside and that makes it harder to recycle. In the old days, all cars had cartridge oil filters. We're back to the future.
5. mdk68gto, ase certified m tech Says: to same on materials, the internal filter as you call it, is pretty simple. as a matter of fact that is what the filters looked like way back in the beginning when they first started filtering the oil in an engine.
wit that canister type, you are not replacing the body of the filter every time, just the filtration media itself. it is a new way of doing things that Toyota is going to. just wait, other companies will follow.
