PoliceOfficer999 Says: If I hold a gear for longer than you usually would and reach higher rev's causing the engine to scream, will this do any damage to the gearbox (or anything else for that matter?)? How long would such damage take to be a problem?

mdk68gto, ase certified m tech Says: if you avoid red line you are ok, if you hang in red line area, you can have some serious trouble. the red line area is a warning if you ask me. i would look at the peak power range for that engine and remain there for safety at least.

Robert M Says: It totally depends upon the type of car, the type of transmission, and what the engineers were thinking when they designed it> Many of the better cars have adjustable shift points. A switch near the shifter will alter the engine speed at which the transmission shifts. Most cars from overseas, under full acceleration, will run the engine to the red-line before shifting to the next gear, if the driver holds the pedal to the floor.
