1. p1nk-3lf Says: im looking for somethink that will increase hp on my car vw polo but im confused whats the difference between ram air and cold air which one is better ? thanks very much
2. Dan Says: Technically ;
cold air adds 1% HP for every 10^ drop from ambient temp under the hood, If under hood temps are 110^ against 70^ outside temps you can get 4% more HP free. ( 300 HP = 312HP)
Ram air is like super or turbo charging pushing more air into a given volume. I don't know the conversion of ram air
oBVIOUSLY THE BEST IS TO RAM COLD AIR.
3. CARL G H Says: both these terms are a type of cold air induction. Ram air refers to a scoop that forces air from the scoop into the intake when driving at higher speeds. cold air induction is often misused terminology. its when the intake piping is changed and a higher velocity air filter is installed. this most often is installed under the hood though and not truly getting "cold air" induction. why colder air? this is the time air has the most oxygen molicules and engines love this producing more horsepower. if that air induction piping were routed just in front of the radiator support where engine heat isnt present more would be gained.
4. scottie Says: well with a polo not much power will be found to tell you the truth your best off leaving as is all these induction kit are no use without proper remapping of your ecu the idea that you can get a extra 10bhp from fitting one of these kits is a load of rubbish depending on mapping of engine is which filter design you should use keep your money and do something else with your car cause all you going to get is a bit extra noise at high rpm
5. $PHX 602$ Says: Cold air is an intake where the filter is located away from the hot engine compartment usually behind the bumper. Ram air is air that is "crashing" the air filter as you are traveling down the road. Usually this is possible on cars with hood scoops allowing air to hit the filter. They will both increase horsepower but i would have to say ram air will be more and more effective the faster you go.
6. Timothy Baker Says: carls right!!
7. Adam Says: They are both designed to lower temperature of the incoming air.

Ram air systems usually have their inlets somewhere outside of the engine bay and utilize wind speed/aerodynamics to force the air into the intake. The faster you go, the more force the air is "rammed" into in the intake with. Keep this in mind when it starts raining.

Cold air systems usually just place the inlet/filter further away from the engine to decrease the amount of heat compared to an o.e.m. system.

You probably won't notice a difference in power, possibly a couple hp on paper though. You would be better off spending your money on a better flowing exhaust or something before worrying about cold/ram air systems.
8. Alice Says: Ram air intake aka, short ram intakes are good for low end horsepower and torque

Cold air intakes have more horsepower gaines then short ram and more top end power.

If your looking for more torque then horsepower, meaning more acceleration but dont care about topping out your car, then short ram intake is what you want.

If you already have enough torque and just want more horsepower and go fast as possible, then cold air intake is what you want.
