How come my 2002 GTI is having trouble starting and emitting a weird smell?

(2010-05-30 16:34:56) 1. exprophecy Says: I have a 2002 Volkswagen GTI 337 and it recently had trouble starting. The engine would sound like it was trying to start but it didn't after 10 or so tries. I thought it was the battery because the battery recently died but I just charged it to 100%. During this time it wouldn't start, I tried jumping it just in case. It still didn't work. After a few more tries without the jumper cables, it was starting to start. After the last try, it started very weakly. As soon as I turned it on, there was this weird smell. I can't really describe the smell but it was very strong. It was coming from the engine. What's going on?2.
