1. Diamondpinktess Says: My golf failed the mot today on the emissions as it is blowing out lots of dense blue smoke during acceleration and it says on the fail sheet also that the emissions has excessive carbon monoxide and the lambda reading is outside the specified limits. The bloke at the station said it doesnt smell like oily smoke but it does use a lot of oil at the moment, having to top the oil up about every three weeks! What do you think I can do to get this fixed? I want to get rid of the car so just want to get it right before it goes but dont want to spend a fortune on it so dont know if best to scrap......
2. who_is_jack_**** Says: Blue smoke IS oil burning so either your piston rings are shot and/or the stem seals are. There is no quick easy fix so if your getting rid of it your going to have to sell it as is unless you want to spend big money getting it fixed.
3. Robert M Says: This car is definitely a KEEPER!!!! WHat you have is a dirty IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE, throttle body, and possibly a collapse in one or more of your crankcase ventilation hoses. Clean out these items. These things affect fuel mixture at low engine speeds, namely when cruising in high gear. Use Amsoil Foaming Cleaner and Gum-out spray to clean th3se things to FACTORY NEW clean!! Check the hoses. Insert cleaner nozzles into as many intake manifold vacuum ports that you can find. Run the engine at various speeds and INJECT, INJECT, INJECT cleaner. When your engine runs TOO RICH (too much fuel) the excess runs past the pistons and mixes with the oil, thinning it out. Correct the fuel mixture (by cleaning what I have already mentioned) and REALIZE that the VW engine MUST have special oil, since the engines have oil piston spray jets inside the engine block. READ your owner's manual!!!! Oil must meet specification 502/505. Other oils clog up spray jets, lifters, timing belt tensioners. and are anathema to proper engine running. LEARN FROM THIS!! WHen you are done with all this cleaning and inspecting, install a set of Bosch Fusion or Denso Iridium plugs. These will burn fuel more completely, produce more power, lower emissions, and improve fuel economy. Running the cleaners through the engine will re-vitalize the O2 sensor(s) and shock them into repairing mixture. GOOD LUCK!!!
4. Joseph G Says: Why don't you just trade it in in your next car.
5. Lorna D Says: Why didn,t you ask the bloke at the garage what would be the best thing to do,he is the obvious person to ask.
