Should i turn my rotors or buy new ones?
(2010-05-30 19:06:12) 1. Says: should i turn my rotors or buy new ones?2. Says: It depends entirely on the thickness of the rotors. If they aren't warped, you can take them to a place like AutoZone or O'Reilly's and they will measure the thickness and compare the number with the specifications for those rotors. If there's enough material on the rotor for them to be turned, have them turned (AutoZone and O'Reilly's also will turn the rotors). It's a lot cheaper than buying new rotors, and frankly, why replace something that doesn't need replacing?Unfortunately, if they're warped, or too thin (because they've been turned before), you'll need to get new ones.3. Says: If the rotors aren't too gouged, or too thin from being turned before, it is cheaper to turn them than to buy new. The turned rotors will work as good as new as long as they were turned by someone who knows how to do it. (They must be turned absolutely flat and true.)4. Says: Depends on cost most places you can get a new set for about the same or less than the cost t turn the old ones5. Says: IF UVE NEVER TURNED THEM TURN THEM IT IS ALOT CHEAPER IF ROTORS ARE NOT WARPED THEN TURNING IS THE WAY TO GO WHY SPEND MONEY FOR NEW WHEN OTHERS ARE STILL GOOD6. Says: depends on if theyre warped and how thick they are. If your driving a truck with thick heavy duty rotors, refinish them because you can and theyre expensive for new ones. If its a little 4-banger then I saw just get new ones as they will only cost $20 each. just my 2 cents!7. Says: They will not turn them if they are too warped or too thin. Their policies ala their insurance company prevent that. So don't worry. If they will turn them, that's cheaper and cheaper is good. There is only one thing left for you to cover. Did you get good miles out of this set before this point? There are some rotors made overseas that are not standing up. Have that discussion with brake guy. Don't use a chain outfit. Go to a good mechanic at a place that does under car stuff.8. Says: Depends on the condition of the old ones, typically its better to replace providing they need to be replaced, if they have bad rust lips, pitting, heat spots or badly warped. If they can turn them ,being close to spec chances are increased that it will warp as there is not as much material to help dissipate the heat, which could cause premature warping. If they are clean and smooth, no rust ect then it shouldn't be a problem to turn them.Me personally id rather a customer be happy when they leave after a brake job,and not have to come months down the road because of their rotors becoming warped.
