96 jetta shuts off while driving?

(2010-05-30 19:15:31) 1. give a little whistle Says: I started to accelerate from a red light and the engine cut out. so i turned the key off and tried to start it but it wouldnt turn over. after a couple attempts it started, i drove 10 feet and shut off again. this continued untill i was able to pull into a parking lot. i let it sit for an hour or so , than it started fine and was able to drive the rest of the way home, about 20 miles or so with no problems. when it shuts off, the check enigine light, battery light and oil light all come on. the temperature of the car is fine, not overheating, rad fan working, enough coolant..etc. i took it to a shop to get a diagnostic code, and they told me that the hydro carbon is high, and that i should replace my head gasket. however, i dont have any symptoms of a blown head gasket, no white smoke from tail pipe, no oil in coolant, no coolant in oil. any other ideas?2.
