Cars rpm dropping under 500 whenever i come to a stop only?

1. Robert R Says: hey i have a FWD 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse and its rpm has been acting up lately. I turn my car on it runs fine and i put it on drive and drive to a stop sign at a low speed and i look at the rpm when im at a complete stop, it drop under 1000 very low to where it wants to shut off some times then i drive and it going good then i hit another stop sign and samething happens. what ive been doing to pervent this was to press the a little to hit 1000 when im at a complete stop. ohh one last thing one time it got so bad the check engine light came on
