What is the firing order of an engine?

(2010-05-30 20:02:40)
1. John C Says: Is it the order that the spark plugs ignite the fuel mixture? and what is the companion cylinders?
2. kritsada Says: Yeah, it's the order that the spark plugs ignite the fuel mixture in the cylinder. For V6 it could be like, 1,5,3,6,2,4. And the companion cylinders are a pair of cylinder that go up and down together. For example, when the cylinder number one is at its intake stroke, the cylinder number six will be at its power stroke. Does this help?
3. Vic J Says: Yes, it is the order in which the spark plugs ignite (fire) the fuel.
With the Chevy 350 V8, the firing order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2, referring to the cylinder numbers.
