Transmission problems!?

(2010-05-30 20:06:07)
1. David M Says: A 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.9 liter and an automatic transmission. It seems to hurry through the gears when taking off, and it doesn't want to downshift out of overdrive. When coming to a corner I have to shift down into second then put it back into drive. First it started just when the truck was cold and be ok after a couple miles. Now it is doing it all the time.
2. the_boy_toy Says: Have you checked the fluid? Sounds like it's starved for fluid. When the trans is cold fluid is thick and cool so that the gears can engage. Once the fluid is hot the viscosity decreases which increases the friction in a trans. If it gets too hot, the gears start to expand and damage begins. When you check the fluid, smell it to see if it smells burned or if it looks dark brown or orange. If it is, you'll have to flush it and replace it with new fluid and a filter.
3. Old guy_64... Says: A service might help if it hasn't been done. A dirty filter causes pickup and pressure problems as well it can cause overdrive to "hang on" good luck
4. solvent Says: Where I live, some cars already need automatic transmission gearbox replacement before that age

You may need the help of a Vehicle Mechanic
5. edwin t Says: not sure but my 98 gmc did this,it was the throttle position valve located on the throttle valve itself.tells the transmission too down shift cost me about 25 dollars too fix.
