Jumping a starter solenoid?
(2010-05-30 20:21:27) 1. Says: got a 1970 f-100 with a 360 in it and its manual. Ok here's my question I am having troubles just using the key to turn it on but it turns on when I start it by jumping the starter solenoid with the key in the on position, what does this mean. . .2. Says: you could fix it, or you could repair it.By jumping it that way what it means is either the starter relay or the solenoid is bad.. If you replace the solenoid it will likely solve the problem either component is rather inexpensive. Better that than jury rig something up that can short and possibly cause a fire.If you were on a ship in the middle of the ocean, would you rather it be fixed up or in good repair?3. Says: im master at this i had a 95 escort lol just run a 12 volt wire from the battery to a switch inside the car and directly to the starter you turn the key and flick the switch till it starts and poof you got a push button
and it means you solenoid is bad or your in line fuse is out and you really don't wanna have to replace that
if your woried about a fire put a fuse inline to the switch any switch will do, and wire will cost like 10 dollars max, its a good temporary fix or you can try the ignition switch, so simple i don't know why i never thought of that...oh yeah because i paid 50 dollars for the car!!4. Says: ur ignition switch is bad ..... could b wiring from it to solenoid as well but most likely is ignition switch.......the electrical part not the key part....
if ur vehicle has the one mounted in the dash u can swap it out in about 15 minutes or less.......steering column takes longer cas u gotta pull the steering wheel...
could also possibly be the solenoid itself....
parts are cheap.....under 20 bucks so just fix it......
** as for the guy recommending u wire in a push button starter switch....that is just dumb to do on such a simple system......would take more work and time and money than to just fix it correctly.... Tag: Jumping a starter solenoid?
