What causes the fuel pump to only work sometimes?

Brandon Says: i have a 1993 mercury sable station wagon and sometimes i can hear the fuel pump cut on and the car will start, then it will cut off by itself and then i cannot hear the fuel pump and it wont start, a few minutes later i can hear fuel pump and its starts, what could the problem be? I have already changed the fuel pump itself.

jjoyyNyou Says: Fuel pump failure could be caused by bad fuel pump relay,fuel pump cut out switch,(inertia switch),connections at pump,relay,switches,ignition switch,wiring,how plugged is the fuel filter,(causing pump to over heat),good luck
