Please help! I've only just passed my test, and I think I've just broken my husbands car? Or is it just old?
(2010-08-19 15:39:51) 1. Says: This car is 11 years old... personally I think it's wear and tear as I've heard this noise before... however, on Monday, I under estimated a speed bump.....Since yesterday (Tuesday) I've heard strange noises, like two metal plates rubbing together maybe? At first I thought something was hanging and dragging along the road, but I got out and checked - There was nothing to be seen!
The noise is worst when driving below 30mph, or when braking... What could this be?
Please help I'm so worried it's my fault. Does it sound dangerous?2. Says: Just so you know,it is customary for the wife to deny any knowledge of an incident that may of damaged the car.
If he gets mad at you, turn the blame on him.Actually it is quite customary for the wife to purposefully damage the car in order to get a better one.3. Says: It sounds as though you've loosened the silencer and exhaust pipe. It might only need tightening up, but if it hasn't been replaced in 11 years, it probably needs a new one. Get it done as soon as possible because there's a risk exhaust fumes could get into the car.4. Says: deny all knowledge of the problem and let your husband drive the car so he discovers the noise then he can sort it out5. Says: Sound like exhaust pipe. However, tell your hubby the old banger has died.6. Says: buy a new car.7. Says: Heat shield come loose.
But you have that many conflicting answers.
Quick Fit ASAP8. Says: It sounds like it could be a problem with the brakes, probably the disks. It could be just grit between the pads and the disk, but it could be the pads are worn down or the servo that forces the pad onto the disk is sticking. You should go to a garage or use the AA (or similar), to check it out.
An exhaust problem would probably sound more like your driving a tractor or tank, you should hear a rumbling sound by simply opening the window while driving.
If it's the brakes sticking, they'll probably get hot when your driving. Check that the wheels aren't hot; carefully they can get very hot after a while. It could also be a wheel bearing, it's more likely to be heard when the car is turning.
If it is the heat shield, it depends where you are. According to some mechanics I've spoken to: in the UK we don't really need it on many cars, in Mediterranean or African countries you definitely do. Tag: Please help!
