How much do new brake pads cost and what is the difference between pads and shoes.?

If you DIY then the cost is about $25.

Most cars have disk brakes on the front,(those take pads), And Drums on the rear (those take shoes) Odds are that the front brakes need to be replaced, not the rear. 75% of the stopping force is on the front wheels.

3. Kenny Says: The cost depends of the car and what other parts will be needed. Like a cost to replace the fronts of a Honda maybe $250 while a BMW will cost $400 because they will be replacing the rotors also.

Brake job are done in sets, front or back. They need to be change only if that set is wore down. Most of the time the fronts wore down a lot faster than the rear.

Pads are for disc brake type system. Shoes are for drum type braking system.
