Tire/Rim Size Question for Truck.?
(2010-09-25 14:10:04) 1. Says: Okay, so i got some 16" rims that i want to put on my GMC (Chevy) Sierra but the tires are smaller in height, the tire size they currently have are 255 50r16. The ones i have on my truck are 255 70r16. Will i be able to just switch out the current rims with the new ones? I'm asking this because the rims appear wider than the stocks. If they won't fit can you tell me what tire size i should buy to use them.2. Says: 255 50R 16 is 50% of the width, which is 255 mm, or 10.04 inches. That means that the height of the tire, figuring the sidewall top and bottom of tire, is 50% of the 10.04 inches each, or about 5 inches tall, so both side walls top and bottom would be 10 inches totalThe 255 70R 16 is 70% of the width, so it is 7 inches tall, or 14 inches total top and bottom.
Add them up. 255 50 is 10 inches total, plus the 16 rim, for a total of 26 inch tall tire wheel combo.
The 255 70 is 14 inches total sidewall height, plus the 16 inch rim, for a total of 30 inches.
So, you have 4 inch more height on the 70 series.
The wheels should be about 8 inches wide, for these tires. You do not want to get rims that are wider then the tires, it could cause problems. a 16 x 8 inch wheel is probably what you need, but check with some tire place just to be sure. Tag: Tire/Rim Size Question for Truck.?
