1. Abel O Says: A few days ago I took my pickup truck to a well known auto repair place. I told the manager that I was on a limited budget but I needed to replace the shocks on my truck. He said it would be about $250.00. But that he needed to put my truck an the lift and exam it before he could tell me that all my truck needed was the shocks replaced. It would be at no charge to me. I told him that if there was other thing that needed to be done to the suspension system I could not afford them at present and that I would be back next week After the examination he came back and said everything else was okay and that he would do the job for $250.00. So I left the truck. When I came back to pick it up, he told me that his mechanic found that the truck needed the idler arms replaced. The bill was now over $600.00 I told him I did not have that much and why after we agreed to a price this happens. He said under California law once they start repairs on the suspension system if they find additional problems the must correct them before they return the car to the client. I want to know is there such a law in California.
2. Michael Says: I'm sure there is not. The law will not allow the vehicle to be driven if it is not roadworthy but the shop is not mandated to make unauthorized repairs. Their responsibility is only to ensure the documentation they keep and the documentation they give you detail the defects. For example, the law will not mandate $5000 repairs to a $500 car.

Your best recourse is to the Better Business Bureau. That may not resolve the situation (although the odds are fairly good, especially for a well-known brand with a name to protect) but is an important step in the legal process and costs you nothing.
