Our brand new car is getting horrible gas mileage?

(2010-10-06 14:05:03)
1. Jan Says: Our car isn't even 3 months old, and we bought it new off the lot (2010 Toyota Matrix). It's supposed to get 26 mpg city, and 32 highway. We were told "You'll actually get a little higher than what the sticker says" but I would be happy with the 26 city. When we drove it home (about a 2 hour drive, highway), we got 25 mpg, and went about 250 miles on that tank. Our mileage has been getting worse and worse, and at our last fill up (after only 150 miles), we got 14 mpg!! Fourteen!

That's worse than when I had my Ford Explorer....

We've had them check the filters, tire pressure, the engine for leaks, etc etc, and it all checked out fine. I barely go the speed limit (a few miles under), and I don't ram on the gas, breaks, etc. I try to keep it below 2000 RPM all the time, even if it takes me a few minutes to get up to speed on the highway. I use cruse control as often as possible, and I let it warm up before I drive.

What am I doing wrong, or is our car a stupid lemon?
2. Zac Says: i agree with this guy, if you just purchased the car then run back to the dealer and start kickin ***, but honestly if the sticker says 26 and you got 25 they will say that's normal, if they don't fix it for you then buy better spark plugs better air filter make sure the alignment is straight check the tire pressure maybe change the idle and then see how the mileage is, if you change all of that it should only cost like maybe 100 bucks give or take a couple bucks, its all simple stuff too you can save some money if you just do all the work your self. PS change the oil too
3. ' Says: You have a brand new car with a factory warranty and you are trying to find a fix yourself ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? WHY ? ? ? ?

Take it back to the dealer and tell them to fix the thing. THEY WILL FIX IT ! !

Is this a Toyota hater question ???????
4. Alex 007 Says: the only good toyotas are they camrys
im not a fan of toyotas though
so i dont know anything about them except for the terrible reviews of there cars

i stick with mazda
they make great cars and have great reviews
5. Alan Says: Trade it in before it is too late. I have heard the Matrix engines. they sound raw and horrible, and are said to be defective. Defective computer components, electronic transmissions clunking causing gas to be gobbled up. Many Matrix are lemons. Sell it now and don't tell the toyota dealer it sucks gas. After all, he lied to you didn't he? But don't get another Toyota. None of them run well. Good luck, and sorry to hear of your Toyota lemon, but there are many reports of these lemons out there. Just google Toyota defects, or accelerations, or steering, or rust, or anything else, and you'll find thousands of defective Toyota reports out there.
