My engine is burning oil, would that damage the engine?
(2010-10-07 02:10:08) 1. Says: I had oil change 7 weeks before. I have been driving for 1500miles. I check the oil level this morning it dropped. It has 2/3 remaining. I always have oil change every 3000 miles / 3month (whichever comes first). Here are 3 questions1.) would that damage the engine?
2.) I believe the oil level would still be in the safety range before next oil change, do I need to worry about burning oil?
3.) No matter what reasons cause my oil drops, just to keep it in the safety range then my car should be fine. Am I right?
Thanks2. Says: Short Answers: No, check it somewhat often, yes.
Long Answer.
All engines burn oil, things like engine size, age, and how hard you drive are the causes for the amount of oil you burn. If this is a new problem, or you are experiencing exhilarated oil burning your rings are the most likely cause. You may want to talk to a mechanic you trust about the possible of replacement of your piston rings.
As long as it remains in the safe zone you engine will be fine. CHECK IT OFTEN, even when your engine runs perfectly your oil level should be checked very often. Now that you know you have a problem its even more important to keep tabs on your oil level. I'd also recommend carrying around a bottle or two of oil. Even if its just some cheap or even used stuff just to get you home. Try not to mix types of oil. Mixing conventional and synthetic for instance, big no no. Try not even mixing brands if you can avoid it.
Going forward your concerns are three fold- 1. Excess oil burning is hard on your wallet. 2. The environment 3. your engine if the oil level dips to low.
.3. Says: No, it is not that bad. You have maintained the oil change better than most. You are right if you maintain the oil in the safety range. 1500 miles, it is bound to lose 'some" oil. I bet that if you just add oil it will work just fine. Check the color of the oil. If it is black then for sure change the oil. if it is a little brown it is still alright. it may not even be burning oil. It may be leaking from one of the seals or the filter. I think there is nothing wrong with your car. Unless you see oil splashes when you park your car. Then it is leaking. If it was burning oil, it would be throwing black or bluish dark smoke. Don't worry about it.4. Says: My car burns oil bad,but my fiance is a mechanic and its ok just as long as you up keep the oil.5. Says: it will damage your engine dude!!!
