Oil pan plug won't tighten or loosen. how do i get it out?
(2010-11-02 14:10:12) 1. Says: was doing an oil change. the bolt didn't come off very easily but it eventually came off after a few mins. when i was trying to screw it back in, it wouldnt tighten nor would it come off.i previously got a oil change at a shop so im thinking they stripped the bolt or the pan,2. Says: put a screwdriver behind the bolt and put pressure on it while you try to turn the bolt out, it should come out, next you will need to go to the parts store and get a self threading drain plug that is the next size larger than your bad oil plug.3. Says: The only way to get it out is to drill it out. Have somebody hold the plug with slip-jaws as you go through larger and larger drills until you can deform it and pull it out. If the threads on the pan are salvageable, you can just put a new plug it. If not, you either need to re-tap the threads for an oversized plug, or get a helicoil kit to restore the threads.
Have fun!!
PS, and make sure you get the shavings out of the bottom of the oil pan with a magnet or finger, otherwise you will have more problems...4. Says: you stretched the threads when you turned the plug the wrong way trying to get it off then stripped the threads when you over tightened it putting it on and now want to find someone else to blame it on, if you had a professional service your car then you could legitimately pass the blame elsewhere5. Says: Go to a parts store and ask for an 'over-size' oil drain plug. They may have one, they may not have one.6. Says: i think you stripped the screw or its not reaching the washer or whatever Tag: Oil pan plug won't tighten or loosen. how do i get it out?
