Is it normal to have screeching engine sounds after instaling new belts?
(2010-11-09 15:10:07) 1. Says: i just got new belts installed in my 2005 G35. when i turn on the ignition it makes a terrible loud screeching sound from the engine and after about 5 seconds it goes away and all throughout my driving. seems those few seconds after turning on the ignition.is this normal and that the belts will be "broken in" or are the belts not properly installed??
thanks in advance2. Says: The one answer mentioned your 'belt tensioner' being weak an needing replaced(?).
It does not have to be replaced as it is only an "idler pulley."
The only time you would replace it is if the bearings were worn out.
It is common after replacing any belts, whether they are 'Serpentine or "V-belts" to have to adjust the "idler pulley" after a few hundred miles. It is a simple matter and virtually anyone can do it--if you are inclined to do anything such as this on your own. You wll need either a 1/2 in or 9/16in socket and ratchet wrench (for most cars) and a short piece of pipe or even a broom stick. You should see the idler tension pulley beside the alternator (again on most cars). "With the motor turned off" You simply loosen the bolt and place the pipe/broomstick beneath the idler and lift up with enough pressure to move it outwards. (It helps to have someone to assist you to hold tension while you re-tighten the bolt). You should be able to see your belts as they tighten. Once this is done, the squealing should stop immediately. "If" it persists, go to Wal-Mart and buy a can of spray on belt dressing and spray a small amount on the belts with the engine running in idle "BUT" be very careful to keep your hands clear. (DO NOT wear loose clothing if you do this) On second thought, if you have neve done anything of this nature, Forget the belt dressing--"IT IS TOO DANGEROUS"-- for someone who has never done it before.
This will eliminate the squealing noise.
Incidently, you can type in these type questions on the internet and usually find a detailed schematic illustrating the step by step procedures to accomplish these type repairs.3. Says: NO, that's not normal. Your new belts are slipping because they are loose or you have a bad accessory. Check the belt to make sure it is tight enough. If not, tighten it or replace your tensioner. If they are tight, check the pulleys on the accessories.4. Says: hi,your gut instinct is right.they are not properly installed if the old ones didnt screech that is.5. Says: You may have a weak tensioner that needs to be replaced.6. Says: You said belts. Do you have multiple belts or one serpentine belt? Tag: Is it normal to have screeching engine sounds after instaling new belts?
