What chain do I need replaced on my 2001 Passat?
(2010-11-11 15:05:05) 1. Says: I drive a 2001 V6 Passat and a mechanic told me I need to get some type of chain replaced (the only information he gave me is that when I'm driving it goes one way, and when I'm idling it goes the other way). I've already had my timing belt replaced. He said it's a $1000 fix. Can anyone give me more info on what type of chain he's talking about, and if its a vital replacement for that amount of money?2. Says: The previous answer is probably wrong; there is 30valve V6 motor that VW has used that has a variable valve timing set that uses a chain and tensioner to change valve/cam timing and thus, improve power and fuel economy. (This is in addition to the timing belt/tensioner set up that is used on all VW/Audi V6 motors.) It is a replacement that you will have to do sooner or later; it is fairly common on high milage motors or those that haven't had the oil changed regularly. You might be able to flush out the oil, which is some cases is known to help the tensioner work properly, after flushing, change the oil and filter and see if performance improves. It doesn't work very often, but it won't hurt to do it and may save you a lot of money. Usually, most people complain about a rattle at idle, which is most commonly the way many people diagnose the chain tensioner noise. Both the 30 valve v6 and 1.8 turbo use a chain and chain tensioner to change cam and valve timing. You can see a video showing the cam tensioner and chain removal from a v6 Passat by going to:

It is very important on VW motors to change the oil and filter at recommended intervals, not exceeding 5,000 miles on engines like yours. Putting a new chain tensioner isn't all that hard, but the parts are very expensive. The V6 engine uses two tensioners and chains; one for each cylinder head. If you watch the video completely, you'll see them remove the camshafts with the chain clearly visible for all to see.
In the short term, you can probably get away with not replacing it, but at some point you will need to this. The noise can get real loud at idle and if the chain stretches enough, you can get the noise at all times. Your fuel economy and power fill suffer... It should be replaced as soon as possible. If you're worried that you're being taken for a "ride", get a second opinion from a dealership or another VW/Audi service specialist.
Hope this helps, a car nut.3. Says: There are no chains on a V6 Passat.
He's trying to pull a fast one on you, or you got it wrong.
