How much should I expect to pay for a front differential rebuild on a 2000 Jeep GC?
(2010-11-17 15:05:14) 1. Says: There was a grinding noise in the front end of my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 Limited Edition. My mechanic is telling me that it will cost me $1100 because it needs to be rebuilt. Is this a fair price? if so, what questions and details should I ask about to make sure it is done right? Please help! This is alot of money to be throwing into my car. :/2. Says: It depends. How many miles are on the Jeep?1st off, is it a full time 4 wheel drive Jeep?
If so, it might be a CV rather than the ring and pinion.
Front differential parts:
Ring and pinion (gears) $175-$250 depending on brand name
Major install kit (bearings and seals) $150-$200
Carrier (what the ring gear rides on) $300-$600 depending on what you want...a stock carrier should be "open" and work just fine if it is not an off road toy, and is the least expensive....they also generally do not go bad on a pavement pounder used as a daily driver. A carrier can also be rebuilt for less than $100 in parts
Axles should be fine. If it is full time 4wd or All wheel drive, it might have central velocity (CV) joints that will wear out and make a clicking noise when turning, but they shouldn't be more than $120 a side
Labor to completely rebuild a front differential in a Jeep should not exceed $450.
I am willing to bet that if you get another opinion, you might be able to save some money
I just rebuilt the rear end in my 2002 F350 last week and it cost me $777.01 in parts and I already had the ring and pinion. Plus, I am a mechanic and get the parts at a better deal. Parts for an F350 cost a bit more than those for a Jeep, due to the size. I had to replace my carrier and opted for an Auburn Limited slip, the reason my parts were so costly.
The rear end was rebuilt by the previous owner at a cost of $5000+ when he snapped an axle flange off the housing, and they didn't do a good job, the reason I just had to do it myself3. Says: 1st of all you look HOT^^
