What should I do with my VW Jetta MKIII?

1. spartan1039x Says: I recently bought a 1997 VW Jetta with only 66,000 miles on it and I don't know if I should keep it stock (because it gets amazing MPG's) or if I should do what I have always dreamed and make a a euro tuner car? I have been at this crossroad since laying eyes upon it and I can't seem to decide. Also, if I do make it a tuner car, should I focus more on aesthetics or performance? I almost don't wanna let go of the awesome gas mileage but at the same time I have done research and have seen the massive potential it has. I can't afford to do both because at this point I am between jobs because of an unexpected medical discharge from the Army and I don't want this thing to be too much of a money pit. I'd say no more than $6,000 in it over the span of a few years is all I could do while managing to keep my current hobby (gun collecting and target shooting) in the picture. Your input would be greatly appreciated Yahoo Community, thanks and have a blessed holiday season.

Most of the owners of these cars do surprisingly little to the engine of their 2.0 Jettas and Golfs. The norm is a breezy modded airbox, chip, cams, exhaust (headers too).

Here is the order in which most guys go about making their VW their own.

1. Maintenance
2. Suspension
3. Wheels
4. Bodywork
5. Everything else
3. inboxfull Says: Sell it. Buy a Porsche 550 Spyder and have it customized by George Barris.
4. James Dean Says: it's really not that good of a tuner car, it only makes about 100-110hp stock and you'll be spending a lot of cash just to have decent power. also, i highly recommend you don't rice it out(yes, even euro cars can be riced). basically, being a ricer means you spend all your cash on things like rims, a body kit, neon lights, and crap like that while having a completely stock car in terms of performance. it's really not cool at all, especially when your car doesn't make much power to begin with.

i know you like the mpg, but if you're serious about performance then my best advice would be to sell it and pick up the VR6 version.
