5 cylinder missfiring how do i fix (more details in q.)?

1. Brendan Says: slight knock or tick, we pulled the driver side valve cover and saw that it looks like the number 5 cylender lifter is stuck the rod is just tapping the lifter

what would you need to fix
how much would it cost do it urself
how much in a shop
anything else

can i drive it without screwing anything else up

2. DJ R Says: If the lifter is not closing properly, you have probably bent the valves. This is pretty extensive repair. A shop will have to rip apart the entire top of the motor (Heads, cams etc) and replace them. Depending on what caused that in the first place, whether it would be old age, things like that, its pretty difficult to do yourself unless you are very experienced. I know a shop will charge in the Thousands for a repair like this. I would not recommend driving it until this is fixed, just so you don't break the valve stems (if its DOHC).

Also, if it's causing a misfire, there must me something major done to the top end.
