1. stephen bradley Says: i had my 2000 subaru outback timing belt replaced got car back drove it for 3/4 months then all of sudden started having problems sent it to dealer they told me that the crank bolt backed off did some damage to my crank they talked me into a short block i told them to go ahead and fix it. can i make the other shop pay for it.
2. AB 2** :) Says: Best thing to do would be to get the dealer to write tho other repair shop a letter telling them exactly what they found. It would defiantly be worth a try as this does sound like they have made a mistake in not re-tightening the bolt correctly. Subaru provide special tools to hold the crankshaft in position while the bolt is re-tightened and these don't always get used due to their high cost. What may have happened is a thread tightening product was used on the bolt that did not allow the correct torque setting to be reached so it worked itself loose.

The best policy is for any mechanic to always follow the instructions from Subaru and in this case they have not.
I have changed many timing belts and as long as the vehicle manufactures instruction are followed correctly everything will work perfectly.
3. AB 2** :) Says: Yes these bolts can back off if they are not correctly tightened. The last car I did I replaced the crankshaft bolt. The way to tell is to run your fingers across the thread-the threads on the bolt must be smooth if they are sharp and feel like they will cut your fingers the bolt must be replaced
4. Duke50 Says: Since the crankshaft pulley has to be removed to get at the timing belt, they obviously did not tighten the bolt correctly. If you have a receipt showing they changed the belt, I would contact that shop and tell them what had happened and tell them you expect them to pay for the repair. If they refuse, you have a good case for small claims court.
5. gary o Says: not likely after so much time and plus it is not likely they even touched the crank bolt.
