1. BeasT Says: I am wonder how much quarts, pints of transmission fluid does my 20003 Volkswagen Passat need. Its automatic.
Thanks
2. a car nut Says: Normally, close to 4 quarts without a filter change, five quarts or so with a filter change. You need to use a fluid that meets G 052 162 A2, VW fluid requirements. Buy an extra quart just in case, the actual fluid capacity will vary slightly depending upon the temperature of the fluid at the time of the change.

The VW fluid is quite expensive, you might be able to obtain the fluid in the aftermarket on the Web for less money, the general agreement is that the Pentosin seems to be the fluid of choice, if you're not buying the fluid directly from the dealer.

The ZF transmission that is used in the Passat is a lot more reliable and less of pain than the 01 transmission used in Golf/Jetta/New Beetle. In the Golf/Jetta etc.. the temperature of the fluid at the time of change is important and normally you'd need to have the VW-Audi tool to run the routine to replace the fluid, but in ZF that really isn't needed. Based upon past experience, I'd recommend that you change the filter as well as the fluid, you'll be surprised how much junk is inside the filter, especially if you've got more than 60,000 miles on it.

Hope this helps, a car nut.
