My 94 Honda Accord LX Battery is being drained even when the car is OFF?

1. Bryan. Says: My original mechanic could not find the problem, what could I do myself, that could solve the problem or at least help me find out what it is?
2. Dan N Says: This is usually caused by one of 3 problems. First one that your battery is just old and can't hold a charge. Easiest way to find out is to take it in to any auto parts store and they can check if for free usually. Second one is that your alternator is not charging. This is usually caused by an alternator just going out, a bad wire connection, or a slipping belt so just do a visual inspectionfor any bad wires or a cracking belt. to see if the alternator is charging just check battery voltage while the car is running, if its less than 13.2 volts your not getting a charge and should replace the alternator. The third one is a parasitic draw which means something is staying on that shouldn't be while the car is off. Easiest way to test this one is to get disconnect the negative battery cable and check how many amps are being drawn while the key is out of the ignition. Generally should be less than .5 amps. If its more then start pulling fuses one by one until the reading drops, then you've found the circuit thats got the issue.
3. ricebike Says: original mechanic didn't perform a "parasitic draw" test??? if he ruled out that your battery/ alternator/ cables are ok...

switch mechanics quickly if he can't even perform that test on a mid-90s car

google the procedure; the info is out there

possible causes: a door light switch staying on, or a trunk light switch staying on as someone else posted it

doing the procedure with a voltmeter and pulling one fuse at a time to find which circuit that has the short in it will narrow this down
4. Top Source Says: Dont start spending $hundreds to replace things w/o doing the posted tests first.

Have only Honda do all the oil-filter changes bc they include a multipoint vehicle check that includes, or used to, the charging system.
5. pierre Says: Could be the battery components are old and failing and it is not holding a charge.
You may have a radio or a light left on
You may have a short on the electric circuits.
Batteries dintt usually last more than three yrs,
Perhaps you are not getting a good charge from the alternator.
6. Mr. KnowItAll Says: Replace your alternator.
7. Bear Says: get the battery tested
u have a short some where
or a trunk/courtesy lite that is stuck on
8. dale r Says: if it is being drained....sum things bein left on.....or.....1 of ur main fuse needs 2 b replaced.....or u got a bad relay
