Flathead V8 problems ?
(2011-01-18 15:15:12) 1. Says: A friend of mine just aquired a 1952 Ford Customline with a flathead V8. The engine has been sitting since 1990 and is siezed. I'm attempting to assist him in trying to free the engine to get it turning again. We have tried prying on the flywheel different ways with no success. The cylinders have been soaked with transmission fluid already. Any ideas about getting it loose ?2. Says: I had that problem on a generator that was forgotten outside over three winters. We took the cylinder head off, put plenty of WD-40 on all visible pistons. then we put a piece of wood between the top of one cylinder which was about half way down (for maximum leverage on the crank shaft) and gradually, very carefully over several days tightened the bolts holding the valve cover down. This allowed far more pressure than you could safely put on a crank shaft or flywheel. Eventually it moved. The cylinders were badly rusted where the piston rings had sat, but at least we could take it all apart again.
You have two cylinder heads, remove them both so you can get lubrication in place. Same for the crank case, you must wet all the bearings. Also, remove all parts that are turned by the engine, such as the oil pump, water pump, distributor drive worm wheel, fan belt, etc.
Carefully is the word, you don't want to break anything. Do it over several days and keep a good measurement on any eventual movement.
Good luck.3. Says: yeah, torch the motor mounts and chuck the boat anchor cause with it locked up thats what you have4. Says: Engine oil should help. Put it in the cylinders on the walls. It's more lubrication, can't hurt anyways Tag: Flathead V8 problems ?
