2. MICHAEL S Says: these fit the bill for your description also they are very cheap to run and low emmissions.low insurance:
These are all basically the same car made by different car manufacturers:
Toyota aygo
Citroen c1
peugeot 106

Citroen tend to be the cheapest to buy, toyota the best buy in my opinion.
3. Neil Says: My advice:
Don't fall in love with your first car.
Treat your first car as a cheap, almost disposable, step to get enough no-claims discount that will allow you to replace it after a year or two with a car you can fall in love with, but with the insurance now affordable.
For a first car, the insurance is likely to cost more than the car. For that reason, you should choose a car with the cheapest possible insurance, not the loveliest (or cheapest) car. Once you've got a good insurance history you can choose the car based on its characteristics, not its insurance cost.
4. Major Sleepy Says: Decide your budget first and then go out and look and test drive as many as it takes. Only you can decide which car will be right for you and there is no reason to rush in. Take your time and test drive loads. Stick to a reasonable engine size like 1300 or 1400 max, anything more powerful will cost a fortune in insurance. Four doors are useful for all the friends you'll be driving around but keep the back doors locked when you're on your own for security. The colour should come last but if you hate the colour, you'll hate the car so don't compromise. Find THE one! The best makes are Japanese, perhaps a Honda (bit pricey perhaps) and Toyota comes out well in the reliability tests. Ford Fiestas or Vauxhall Corsas are good solid cars but maybe a bit too popular (i.e. common!). Good luck and have fun looking.
5. steph Says: I would suggest a very nice ford fiesta zetec, the new shape looks sophisticated yet fun and very professional. They come in green but look great in black or the hot pink/purple colour. Both stylish and reliable. Every car i've had has been a ford and as it is such a common make if there were ever to be a problem almost any garage could fix it!
6. Kha P. Says: I suggest that you buy a reliable, gas efficient vehicle for your first car.

My friend has a 2010 Hyundai Elantra and it is very gas efficient; you can fill the gas up all the way with $20. It's also cheap and you can get it in black. It's stylish as well.
7. Top Gun Says: A good car for a young lady, would be a economical car such as a Honda, or Toyota. Gas, will soon be up to over $4.00 per gallon. Get a car with automatic transmission. Never, pay window sticker price for a new car. Have a male go with you, when purchasing. Women, usually get taken advantaged of ...... and end up getting ripped off!
8. Larry Says: It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota... First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car - for example here - carinsurance.deep-ice.com
9. The Swiz Says: Buy an Opel Tigra !
10. entertainment fan Says: Honda Civic
11. david m Says: start with something in the small ins group like a 1.0 ltr car
12. britishshoplist.co.uk Says: Buying your first car, especially if the first car is a used car, can be a daunting experience. Below is a guide to make the process easier.

First of all decide how much you can afford to pay for your first car. Not just the sum to buy the car itself but also the running costs - car insurance, MOT, road tax, petrol, repairs and servicing.

With a figure in mind consider what category of car you want your first car to be in. As new drivers this is likely to be a small car or maybe small family car.

Then do your research. Magazines such as Parkers and The Which Car Guide rate, review and price all types and models of cars. Road tests will give you detailed information on performance, reliability, handling and other important points. When you come to negotiate the purchase of your first car such information will prove vital. You will know the price you should be paying, whether the model has any common faults, specific issues to look out for etc.

Now with a model and price in mind you're ready to shop. So what are the options when it comes to buying a first car?

Franchised dealer - usually better quality used cars but at higher prices. Good after sales services and assistance. Buying from a franchised dealer gives you maximum legal protection. Of course dodgy franchised dealers exist so look for an established company with a good reputation. Ask family and friends for recommendations. Generally speaking using a franchised dealer is a good option when buying a first car.

Independent dealer - often a wide variety of potential first cars at lower prices. However, variable used car quality and after sales service.

Auction - potential to pick up a first car bargain. Car quality can be inconsistent however, and some dodgy cars can be bought. There is also little chance of financial comeback if the used car develops any serious faults. To get the best out of a car auction it is best to go with someone who knows about cars. Your usual legal rights may not apply if the seller issues a disclaimer, i.e. 'sold as seen', which excludes all or some of those rights. Read the auctioneer's conditions of business carefully to check whether this is the case.
