What are the diffrences between the diffrent jeep rangler versions?
(2011-01-22 15:15:20) 1. Says: And please rate the Sport, Rubicon, SE, JK, and Sahara in order of best to worst.2. Says: SE, Sport, Rubicon, Sahara, X are trim and equipment packagesCJ, YJ, TJ, JK are year series
CJ - 1945 - 1986, round headlights, leaf springs, open frame, narrow axles more subject to rollovers than later models, usually better axles and transmissions.
YJ - 1987 - 1995, square headlights leaf springs, boxed frame (stronger) wider axles, sway bars and track bars added, weak D-35 rear axle, decent HP D-30 front axle with disconnect on passenger side axle. Some years have a Peugeot BA-10 transmission, very weak and subject to breakage. Later models got the Asian AX-15, a decent but not outstanding transmission.
TJ - 1997 - 2006, round headlights, coil springs, better ride, more suspension flex. Boxed frame. D-35 rear axle was stock but an upgrade to D-44 was available on some trim packages. Back to the low-pinion D30 front, some think it's not as strong as the HP. No more disconnect, solid axle on passengers side. AX-15 transmission from 1997 - about 2003, NP 3550 from 2003 to either '05 or '06, I forget. Latest models have the German 6-speed manual or a 4-speed Auto.
JK - 2007 to present. Round headlights, wider stance, coil springs, very flexy suspension, good off road jeep out of the box. Bigger all around, taller stance, four doors available for the first time.
4-cyl option goes away, L-6 replaced by the chrysler v-6. Low pinion D-30 front, most have D-44 rear axle, but I think some early ones came with D-35. YOU DON'T WANT one of those.
SE - lowest trim package, bare bones came with 4-cylinder engine. Discontinued sometime late 1990s
X - one step up, included 6-cyl engine, base package now that SE is discontinued
Sport - was one step up from X with nicer interior and carpets, now combined with X (Sport X)
Sahara - painted fenders, very nice seats and plush interior, comfort package
Rubicon - offroad package - upgraded axles and transfer case, locking differentials, lower final drive ration, bigger, more aggressive tires.
No such thing as better or worse, you evaluate your needs and pick what's appropriate for you.3. Says: Best to worst goes like this
