What's the best 4 wheel drive vehicle with good gas mileage?

Do you just need some extra traction and control, or are you going off-roading?If 4WD, for good ground clearance / off road capabilities. a Toyota pickup / Tacoma / Hilux (the name depends on where you live and its age). If you want a compact 4WD crossover, the Suzuki SX4 probably gets the best fuel economy, followed by the Honda CR-V.
If a compact, all-wheel drive car, probably a Subaru Imprezza. (The WRX version will use considerably more gas and requires premium fuel). The Audi A4 actually gets better milage, but it drinks premium fuel, like most turbocharged cars, and there's not really anything cheap about owning an Audi.3. Says: I was looking for the same thing, I settled on a Jeep Liberty Sport with the 3.7 v6 it gets around 15 in town maybe a little better and 20 on the hwy.
