Super charger and turbo charger. Whats the complete difference?

1. Michael L Says: Whats the main difference and what does the difference do? Which is better?
2. Jacory Says: Neither is "better" than the other. It all depends on what fits your needs and your personal preference. A turbo is driven by exhaust gases and a supercharger is driven by a belt off the crankshaft. I prefer Roots type superchargers, It make boost at low RPM's. It also doesn't suffer from the Turbo chargers achilles heel, turbo lag.
3. roger Says: a supercharger sits on top of the engine, and a belt comes off the main crankcase pully that powers the water pump and power steering pump. It makes power by compressing air and fuel into the engine, the turbine spins at very high speed, 10 of thousands of rpm per minute. From a durability stand point they hod up well, however any high speed bearing set up, is prone to bearing failure
.A turbo charger also compresses air and fuel mixed, except it is powered by waste gases from the exhaust. It also has a turbine style set up, and while bearings can be an issue, it does not spin at the same rpm a supercharger does, so in theory anyway, Is usually more dependable, without robbing power from the engine from the begining.
4. Bill M Says: They both compress the air going into the engine. A supercharger is powered by a belt, and a turbocharger is powered by exhaust gas.
