Alternator or something different?
(2011-02-02 15:20:17) 1. Says: so i was driving around today in 42 degree (107 F) heat and i had my air con full blast and noticed a slight power decrease and tonight driving the alternator light has started flashing along with the ABS light, then the stereo decides to cut out a few times... so i stop driving for awhile and get back in to make my journey home and the ABS light has turned off but the Alternator light is still flashing, at the end of my 40 min trip my speedo and tacho stop working, lights go dull, stereo stops completely and then every warning light has turned on.... i turn the car off and try to turn back on but all i hear is a grinding noise, the lights get brighter but car wont turn on. The entire dash ie: kms, trip distance has reset to zero.Could this be needing a new alternator or something different...
oh btw its a 04 VY Holden Calais V6 Auto.
Also if it is a replacement alternator and your a mechanic roughly how much am i up for to get it replaced professionally??2. Says: I would start at the basics. If you can get it started by either just turning the key or jump starting it then do so? Once its running disconnect the negative cable so that the vehicle is no longer connected to the battery. It will now be solely running off of the alternator. If it cuts off then your alternator isn't putting out what it should be? If it stays running put a load onto it by turning on all accessories. If your alternator is bad it will shut the vehicle off.3. Says: Question? Most Air conditioning on car dashes usually go down to about 60-65*F for a a low. A 30*F difference in temperature would be around 77*F from 107*F would be quite comfortable. Were you wearing ear muffs and a ski-jacket. Check! your altinator with a voltage tester, should be around 13.6 volts. Sounds also like the fluid level is down or boiled dry. Then you will need a new battery!4. Says: Can only give you a US type answer. Auto parts stores will check your battery and alternator for free. Hopefully it just needs a new battery. About $75 +/- and the auto parts store will install it free. If it is the alternator, more like $150-275 dollars US. We don't have any Holden Calais' so I couldn't guess for sure.5.
