What happens when the spark plugs on a car are dirty?

1. Alfonso Says: will it start? how would the engine fail?
2. al Says: Depends how dirty. After typical use it makes the car hard to start on cold mornings and robs you of a margin of mpg's. They will not make your engine 'fail' so to speak, just run sluggish. Replacing them is easy on most modern cars and you can find rebates and deals all over so why wouldn't you replace them?
3. Mad Jack Says: Dirty spark plugs are usually a symptom of a different problem. Black soot usually means too rich of fuel air mixture. A black gooey film is motor oil. Wet is usually raw gas.

It depends on how extreme the problem is if the engine will start or not. Also if a multi cylinder engine the other cylinders may still fire and allow the engine to start and run.
4. mdk68gto, ase certified m tech Says: plugs dont stay clean for very long, the area of the dirt is one variable in this question. as long as the anode adn electrode are clean enough, it will still fire off the fuel, that flame front can clear some of the material from the surfaces.
5. beeboppinbippity Says: It will start most likely and it might run poorly(loss of power or fuel efficiency), the spark plug will not ignite the fuel properly and there will be left over carbon in the cylinders which will eventually clog up the valves.
6. Mr. Sonny Says: If they are not too dirty, the car will start & run. However, you will waste gas & it will run poorly. If they are very dirty, you're stuck.
7. Diagnostic Ddt Says: weak spark to no spark
8. just me 23 Says: splutter miss fire it will run like a bag of crap lol may not start less ower :)
