What would you recommend getting? Dodge Cummins or Chevy Duramax?

1. PK Says: I want to buy either a 3/4 ton 01-04 Dodge Cummins or a 3/4 ton 01-04 Chevy Duramax. I want to use it to pull loads so I need to know which one would you recommend getting.

2. Sean Says: Nobody who is a mechanic would recommend an early Duramax over any year Cummins. Cummins has the best reliability record in the light duty truck segment, and their larger engines power many commercial vehicles as well. The early Duramax like you are referring to are plagued with problems. They are an iron block, aluminum headed diesel, which doesn't work well. They are also fitted with dual layer head gaskets which blow at regular intervals even without modification. The cummins is, for all intents and purposes, indestructable. You can tune it to much higher power levels without risking damage, unlike the Duramax. The Duramax, after all, was designed by Isuzu, so how well do you trust Isuzu engines?

3. dwayne f Says: As a mechanic I have seen more problems with the Cummins then the Duramax.
Of course you will get differing opinions on who likes what like the two truck manufacturers are NFL football teams, but coming from an experienced mechanics point of view I would go with the Duramax.

4. gwood5turbo Says: Im a chevy guy. The cummins is also a great motor though. If you plan to leave it stock go with the duramax. if your gonna chip it go cummins!

5. billy25685 Says: I say both are great motors, so vehicle choice should be focused on miles and price. You want to get the newest and best vehicle possible whether it be Cummins or Duramax.
