Is it bad to get a tiny amount of water in my gas tank?

1. Matthew Jurgens Says: Hi, I filled up my car today with gas, and I decided to use the express wash thing for the first time. However when I got home I noticed like and idiot I left my tank open. First I would like to know, is this bad, and if so what should i do? It's an 2009 Chevy Cobalt, if that makes a difference. And I did go straight home in sunny non windy weather.
2. Jeff Says: well unless on your car the opening were you put gas in is fully exposed, most cars have lids or doors that get closed so even if the cap is left off you should not have gotten any water in the tank.

however, go to your local parts store and buy a product name "HEET" it is for moisture in the tank and lines. read directions and add a bottle to your tank and it should take care of it. But if you somehow got a gallon or more of water in your tank then you will experiance issues with the way it runs and will end up having to drain the tank, flush the lines and replace the fuel filter.

good luck
3. Stitch Says: Gasoline sold today has about 10% ethanol which is a form of alcohol & unless you got several quarts of water in there the ethanol will absorb the water the down side might bee poorer mileage on this tank. If you didn't have any problems with it on the way home you're probably alright. If you want to you can fill your tank up with premium when ti gets down about half a tank the premium gas has additives that will help absorb any excess water. But don't use it regularly because that engine doesn't require premium fuel.
4. apoorapothecary Says: As mentioned - the gas door will keep the majority of the water out of your gas tank. What is very surprising to me is that your check engine light didn't go on, nor did your car sputter to a stop - I haven't heard it happen with the Cobalts, but many GM cars will not run right and throw the CEL if you leave the gas cap off.

And also as mentioned - add a bottle of "dry-gas" now, and again at your next fill-up or two to ensure that the water is removed. Unless a large amount of water gets in, its not a major problem.
5. Loki Says: Your filler neck has a little spring loaded door at the top that kept most of the water out. That plus all the alcohol that is in gas these days will absorb a 'small' amount of water. Your car is injected so if you got enough water in it to be a problem, you'd have noticed pretty quickly. Jeff gave good advice, go get 2 or 3 bottles of Heet and add one to each of your next few tanks to get rid of any water that did get in there.
6. fatguy330 Says: yes water in your fuel will mess up everything..go to autozone and get a bottle of dry gas..it will remove the water
