1. adam_walker73 Says: 120k miles. A couple surface rust spots decent interior. Flowmaster exhaust system. Seems to run good. Everything seems to work. 1000 bucks. Sound reasonable or is that too much for such an old car?
2. roger Says: that was a good year, the drive train is strong and will run good a long time, the only problems or I guess I should say if the lincoln town cars have a flaw, it is usually with something electrical like a power window or a seat button, so if all that works, or the owner took good care of the car. And it passes what I do to all used cars, I test drive ANY USED CAR WHEN COLD, after sitting overnight. I ask the owner the night before not to start the car (this is less of a problem with a car dealer) Some older cars, just starting to have an engine or tranny problem, it may only show up when cold, So I open the hood to make sure the heat is not rolling off from a thorough warm up, wave my hand and just touch the possibly hot exhaust manifold to make sure its stone cold as I requested, then fire the car up. As long as the engine starts easily with no knocking or banging or rattling, and stays running and smooths into a high idle within 5 to ten seconds, and there is no big clouds of smoke, GOOD ! The next step is give it just a minute or two for the oil to circulate, and then drive it like you stole it. If the car runs, drives and stops good cold, and can get up to 55mph easily in the first 5 to 7 minutes, so far so good. Plan on taking it for at least a 30 to 40 minute test drive, and check all the lights, and buttons and switches your self, power windows, go all the way up, and all the way down several times each.
A car with a major transmission problem, may not even move when cold, for the first 10 to 15 minutes. And yes, there are people who will dump a car, the minute a problem shows up. Im in a wheelchair, and have had people try to burn me by selling me a vehicle with a bad tranny.
So don't think it will not happen. A few things I have learned as warning signs, someone who bought a car and tries to sell it, especially a kid. They do not have a lot of money to begin with, and don't sell anything until its beat. Some people buy cars, and try to resell them, beware of the ones who did not register the title in their name, the dmv is starting to refuse to Title cars with screwed up titles now, its not worth the hassle, I don't have a problem with someone who buys and sells cars, as long as they are truth full about it. Its the ones who lie (that I catch ) if they are hiding something like buying a car to resell? what else are they lying about too.
Finding cars owned by older adults is what I look for, I can do this on the phone, and eliminate 99 percent of cars I don't want, its an exercise in patience looking for a good used car, if the car runs, drives and stops good cold, you have a winner, for a grand that's a good deal, those v8 cars of the 80s were for the most part the good ones, you can tell because there are still a lot of them driving around. good luck
