If a battery in a car doesn't throw out enough power, can it affect the computer in a way that the car doesn't?

1. dajram Says: get enough fuel? can it affect the "brain" that tells the pump how much to pump or the regulators how much to send to the carburetor?
my mechanic said my fan belt is loose, and it's causing the car to lose power.
it's also been hesitating and seemingly not getting enough fuel.
2. silverbullet Says: There are any number of problems that could cause insufficient fuel flow, the most obvious being faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or clogged fuel injectors.

Beyond that, one or more faulty sensors could trick the computer into thinking the engine was getting enough fuel.

If your battery voltage were low enough to affect the function of the computer, the car wouldn't start at all.
3. Ron Says: The hesitation will not be caused by a loose belt, Dajram. IT can cause poor charging, but if the car is starting okay, that's probably not an issue.

Most vehicles today do not use carburetors. If you have one, the fuel is delivered 100% determined by the air flow into the engine. If you have old filters in the carbureted vehicles, this can cause the car to not receive enough fuel, but this becomes apparent first at higher loads (loss of top end speeds). This is less an issue with fuel-injected engines, but still can cause a loss of power.

More likely, your engine needs a good thorough cleaning. For a quick fix, you can put some mothballs (The "Old Fashioned" ones!) into the gas tank. These are made of 100% Naphthalene, a hydrocarbon found in most fuels already. The nice thing about this is they will clean EVERYTHING from your gas tank forward without risking engine damage.

Simply put one mothball into your tank for every 2 gallons of fuel, then add some gas to help them into the system. They will dissolve readily and pass through the system with amazing results. Get ready for a burst of power!

4. bandit_60 Says: it would,nt cause it to lose power. all the belt does is turn the alternator which keeps the battery charged. your hesitating is probably the fuel filter getting dirty.
5. molitor Says: No
6. Bud Says: "My Mechanic" two fatal words. Most independent shops don't know enough to diagnose a real problem. They sell you all kinds of stuff you don't need, until they get to the problem by accident. Even though the dealers hourly rate SEEMS to be higher, in the long run it is usually cheaper. I've been in the business for 50 years and I'll be the first one to tell you I don't everything. There is no way an independent shop knows everything on every car. A lot of them don't even know the basic theory of operation, so they just guess and start changing parts until they get lucky. In answer to your Question a loose alternator drive belt MAY not keep the battery charged, so yes it needs to be adjusted. More than likely you have another problem ,but first things first. Anything is possible. Don't put moth balls in your tank! Get the car fixed correctly. HERE COMES THE HATE MAIL!
